THAILAND

Chiang Mai – Pansook Urban Apartments ( 11 EUR / NIGHT)

Chiang Mai was our base home from 5th December 2013 to 28th March 2014.  We stayed in Pansook Urban Apartments. This condo building is very new – first tenants moved into it in November 2013. Building has just 7 floors. There is no swimming pool or a gym but apartment is located in a great area between Old Town and Nimmanhaemin Road, close to Kad Suan Kaew Shopping Centre and newly opened Maya Shopping Centre (Jan 2014). You can walk from the apartment to Thapae Gate or Night Bazaar (about 30/40min walk) while living in a quite and nice area. Apartment is equipped with a small kitchen incl. fridge, microwave and 1 electric stove. Monthly rent  is 15.000 THB (334 EUR) with internet included. Min contract was 3 months. At the time of the contract we paid 3 months in advance plus one months deposit. We have found this apartment via friend of ours who happened to walk by the building and inquired at the reception. If we come back to Chiang Mai, we will try to stay here again.

Chiang Rai – The Imperial River House Resort (65 EUR / NIGHT)

We have spent 3 nights in Chiang Rai – from 21st to 24th February. We stayed in The Imperial River House Resort. We booked our stay via www.agoda.com We had Deluxe Room with Breakfast & Round Trip Transfer. Room rate per night was 51 EUR but at the time of check out I realised it did not include service charge 10% and hotel tax 7% so our final bill come at 195.12 EUR. Hotel is located a little far from the city centre however taxi will get you to the city just for 60THB (1.33 EUR). Hotel is located next to the river, its very peaceful and has large and beautiful swimming pool. The check in procedure was the quickest I have ever experienced. Would stay again.

Bangkok – Silvia’s Private Apartment in Life Condo (46 EUR / NIGHT)

We have stayed in Silvia’s 1 bedroom apartment from 23th to 31st January – total of 8 nights. The total bill was 366 EUR (and that included 47 EUR for AIRBNB through which we have rented this apartment). Checking the airbnb website today looks like Silvia reduced price of the apartment to 120EUR a week – check it here. Apartment is located on the 16th floor of the condo building with the roof top swimming pool and gym, which are absolutely gorgeous. We enjoyed great view from the bedroom windows. It is located within 5-10 min walking distance to BTS Saphan Kwai station (Bangkok Sky Train). Apartment is located about 20 mins from Don Muang Airport by taxi (we paid less than 200THB). The wifi connection was excellent – even better than in our apartment in Chiang Mai. It is not super modern apartment but feels very homely and cosy. Apartment has a kitchen with 2 electric stoves. There is an office desk and a normal table which made is perfect for us to work. Would stay again.

Bangkok – Amari Dong Muang Airport Hotel (46 EUR / NIGHT)

We have stayed in this airport hotel just 1 night when arriving late from Myanmar and having an early in the following morning. We booked the hotel via booking.com. Hotel is located pretty much right in the airport. You just need to take a lift from Arrivals and walk 100m via over street tunnel and you are straight in the reception of the hotel. Room was large, clean and comfortable. You will also receive 2 hours free WiFi coupon which was perfect for us. We did not book breakfast as we preferred to have nice croissant and juice at the airport. We stayed in Deluxe Double room and paid 2060 THB (46EUR). Would stay again if flying from/to Dong Muang Airport.

Koh Samui – Bophut Village Apartment (26 EUR/NIGHT)

In Koh Samui we stayed from 31st March till 3rd of May 2014 (just over one month). This was our the most gorgeous and largest house while travelling.  House was located on a small estate with a lovely swimming pool. House was 135m2. Ground floor included spacious living room, large dinning table and fully equipped Western kitchen with 4 stoves, over, american size fridge. There was also a washing machine (only this apt and Sylvia’s apt in Bangkok had those). Also as with Silvia’s apartment this one had a private Wifi connection with excellent speed and performance. The cost of apartment was 35.000 THB per month or 30.000 THB if renting for over 3 months. We have rented this apartment via: www.OverseasPropertyPortfolio.com  Our agent was Jum but most of the dealings we had were with Oh – the best property manager we have ever met!

Koh Tao – Nadapa Resort (43 EUR / NIGHT)

Phuket / Patong Beach – Deevana Resort  (56 EUR / NIGHT)

We have stayed in Deevana Resort for 1 night only from 3rd to 4th May 2014. Walk in price was 2.500THB for the room in the main building. There were cheaper rooms in bungalows but we felt in a bad need of a really nice and specious room with modern bathroom. Originally we booked apartment via Airbnb which turned out to be a big scam (will never again rent apartments with lack of reviews!) and Deevana was next door. Very nice receptionist, two swimming pools and nice large room. Breakfast was included. Unfortunately internet in the room was pretty much not existent so we needed to look for alternative which was Viridian Resort.

Phuket / Patong Beach – Viridian Resort  (27 EUR / NIGHT)

We have stayed in Viridian Phuket Resort from 4th May till 12th May 2014. We have found this hotel by walking around the area and inquiring about available rooms. In each hotel we were viewing the room and checking internet connection. Based on viewing about 7-9 hotels we chose Viridian. For each night of the say we were paying 1200THB a night so for 8 nights total bill was 9600 THB (215 EUR). It included a breakfast buffet which was great.

Resort is located pretty on the main street of Patong but its not as loud as you could expect. Rooms are spread over ground floor and 1st floor of building surrounded by lots of trees. There is also a swimming pool. Internet at the end was not as strong as at the first few days of staying there but if u can accept occasional short breaks you should be fine to work from there.  Apartment is located within 10 min walking distance to the beach. Would stay again.

When booking your room make sure you negotiate the price as their website (http://www.viridianphuket.com) provides prices for current dates starting at 4000 THB a nite which is almost 4 times more than what we have paid.

Klong Muang (close to Ao Nang/Krabi) – At Sea Condominium (29 EUR / NIGHT)

We have stayed in 1 bedroom apartment managed by Alex from 12th to 19th May – total of 7 nights. The total bill was 180 EUR (plus 22 EUR for AIRBNB through which we have rented this apartment). Apartment is located on the 4th floor of the condo building and from the balcony you can see the sea. There is also large outdoor swimming pool and gym.  Apartment is located within 10 min walking distance to the beach and about 10km away from Ao Nang. If staying here consider renting the scooter (250THB a day) or car (1200 THB a day). The wifi connection is acceptable – also speed is just 1.40 MBs the ping speed is excellent and we can both comfortably work. Apartment is very clean, bright and large enough for 2-4 people. Apartment has a kitchen with 4 electric stoves. Would stay again.

Koh Lanta – Koh Lanta Resort (34 EUR / NIGHT)

We have stayed in the Koh Lanta Resort for 1 nite from 17th to 18th May. We have found this hotel when on island by driving around. The room price was 1500 THB incl. breakfast. Would stay again.

Phi Phi Islands – Gypsy Village (40 EUR / NIGHT)

We have stayed in the Gypsy Village for 1 nite from 24th to 25th May. We have found this hotel when on island by walking around. The room price was 1800 THB incl. breakfast. Would stay again.

HONG KONG

Hong Kong – Rosedale Hotel (89 EUR / NIGHT)

In Hong Kong we have stayed for 5 nights from 26th March to the 31st February 2014. Finding accommodation in Hong Kong was challenging because we required internet connection in the room and 2 work stations. On the top of it Hong Kong is super expensive and we wanted to stay close enough to everything. Our bill for 5 nights was 4680 HKD which is 443 EUR.

MYANMAR (BURMA)

Yangon – Yangon Regency Hotel (49 EUR / NIGHT)

In Yangon we have stayed for 2 nights from 31st January to the 2nd of February 2014. Finding accommodation in Yangon was challenging because standard is much lower than in Thailand. We wanted to stay in the city center so looked for a hotel in China Town. This was a mistake. There is a large distance between attractions to see in Yangon therefore multiple taxis a day where required anyway. China Town was very busy and dirty at night. The hotel was at a budget traveler style and although rooms were clean and reception friendly we would not stay there again. If again in Yangon we would choose a hotel closer to University which is surrounded by beautiful lake and green areas to walk. For 2 nights accommodation in this 1 star hotel we paid 97.80 EUR.

Ngwe Saung Beach – Bay of Bengal Resort (102 EUR/NIGHT)

We booked Bay of Bengal as we wanted to treat ourselves to luxurious paradise beach holidays. We stayed in this hotel from 2nd to 10th of February 2014 (8 nites in total) and we paid 816EUR. This included breakfast. We have stayed in Deluxe Garden View Room which is the cheapest option offered by the hotel. The room however was the nicest neither of us have ever stayed in. This resort is located at the end of 15km long white sandy beach. The resort is nicely spaced out which means that guests of 64 rooms does not feel crowded. There is always a room next to the swimming pool or on the beach. Hotel grounds are beautiful and very well maintained. Swimming pool is stunning. We would stay again.

Taipei – Chris’s Apartment (56 EUR / NIGHT)

We stayed with Chris for two nights. We took a taxi from the airport to get to his apartment and we paid 1.300 T$. Taxi driver was awesome and he found Chris place without a GPS. As soon as we got into the apartment we felt great. Chris designed his apartment with the greatest attention to detail! What an apartment! We were speechless! Pics do not give it a justice.
There is a fabulous collection of Sturbucks cups from all over the world (so if you coming for few days bring one from your country and I am sure Chris will love it), a beautiful aquarium and lovely perfectly matching furniture. Not to mention the view! Breath-taking view over Taipei mountains (apt is on the 8th floor).
Apt is very bright, quiet and spacious. There is a large table in the living room which was perfect for 2 or even more people to work. Internet Wi-Fi is super reliable and you can comfortably work without any worry about the speed (10Mbps).
There is a spacious kitchen with everything you need for cooking a meal, including an oven and a kettle. In the room adjacent kitchen you can find a washing machine with hangers. There is also quiet, perfectly working air conditioning and hair dryer.
Chris is the best landlord we have met so far in our travels. Nice, kind helpful with a good heart. He takes time to explain you everything from the apt, area to points of interest in Taipei. He immediately let us feel like we have known him for a long time and we felt very comfortable at his apt. Chris is very welcoming, there were cold drinks waiting for us in the fridge and bathroom toiletries incl. disposable tooth brushes and towels. He even offered us a lift twice over 3d/2n stay! Chris is very helpful and always willing to talk but if want your privacy he will definitely respect that, so its really up to you how much contact with the host you would like to have. Thanks to Chris our Taipei experience is the best in Asia so far!
MRT station is very close by (2-3 minutes walking distance) and there are many restaurants, shops, cafes and supermarket within a very short distance. The area is beautiful, not overcrowded but only few MRT stops from the city centre. We cannot recommend Chris’s apt enough.

Taipei – Juan’s Apartment (36 EUR / NIGHT)

BALI, INDONESIA

Ubud – Amrit Bed & Breakfast (32 EUR / NIGHT)

Amrit B&B was our first accommodation in Bali and I think you cannot start your Bali holidays from a better experience. We stayed 3 nights and we would love to stay longer. Everything looks even better than on pictures! We arrived very late and were tired. As soon as we got to the house and walk in to our room all tiredness went away.. Fresh air came inside the room. We sat on the huge, comfortable bed, looked around the room and felt peace and quiet… Amrit is truly a “5 star B&B”. The cleanliness of the room, the furniture, the Balinese breakfast… everything was awesome. Wayan’s family is great and by staying at Amrit’s you will have a real Balinese family experience (but still you can have plenty of privacy if you wish too). Amrit has 4 rooms. We booked the one downstairs. You can use the kitchen and there is an outdoor shared space with couches and a big wooden table. All the wood is carved by the owners. In the room you have private balcony with beautiful view of the garden. You wake up every day with this gorgeous scenery feeling great and happy. The room is very spacious and bright with windows on two sides of it. Bathroom is amazing, partially open. There is also a gallery where Wayan’s family displays their wood work. Wayan is a great guy, very nice and accommodating and he gave us numerous lifts to Ubud. 3 days were enough to become friends. You can’t get more than this! Wayan’s cousin is an excellent driver so you can arrange all your trips around Bali from trusted person. Very highly recommended. I would definitely come again and book more days.

Ubud – Private Room, House is a rice field (18 EUR / NIGHT)

The house is located in a middle of rice field – 6-8 mins walk to the one of main streets in Ubud. There is a good walk path all way down to the house so you can also ride your motorbike right up to the house. Based on the settings it’s definitely one of the highlights of our stay in Bali. Every day we were woken up to the 360 degree view of rice fields, surrounded by nature at its best. The only minus of it is that if you coming back at night, road maybe a little scary due to darkness and all the different sounds but it’s safe.

There are few very good restaurants located within walking distance from the house.

This is a two story house with 4 bedrooms. Each bedroom functions on its own with locked doors and bathrooms. On the ground floor there is large living area and well-equipped kitchen. What makes this house even more special is a private swimming pool.

The biggest plus of the house is very fast internet connection considering you are in Bali. Most places have internet < 1Mbps, occasionally 2Mbps. Keith’s is 5Mbps – which is an exception for Bali so all digital nomads will find it great!

We have not met Keith in person by our communication was very prompt and he was very helpful.

Seminyak – Villa Gambira (200 EUR / NIGHT)

Excellent villa with lovely swimming pool and living area. Walking distance to the beach. Ultimate private lux villa experience.

Candidasa – Rama Candidasa Hotel (49 EUR / NIGHT)

Lovely, relaxing hotel. Perfect for 2-3 nights of visiting surrounding areas. One of the best check-in experiences ever. Very spacious rooms and bathrooms. Super clean. Got free upgrade to junior suite. Great sun beds set up overlooking the ocean. No beach though.

Nusa Dua – Kubu Garden (26 EUR / NIGHT)

Stayed 4 nights. Poor internet < 1Mbps.  but was ensured it will be upgraded to 2 Mbps but offered a solution in friends bed and breakfast. Clean bedroom. Simple bathroom. Great America Breakfast.

Booked via Booking.com

Uluwatu – Padang Padang Breeze  (28 EUR / NIGHT)

The hotel is located not far from Padang Padang beach but you will need a scooter to get there. There is no walking path and walking down the road can be scary at moments.

The hotel includes series of one level joined rooms – each has separate entrance. Rooms are very specious with high ceilings and styled rustic. At first it makes great impression. Each room has a private basic bathroom with shower. The isolation between rooms is terrible and you can hear people talking in the other room as if they were on the bed next to you.

We were disappointed with the cleanness of the rooms and bathroom. There are no proper duvets, only short blankets which we found hard to believe they are washed for each new guest. Water in the bathroom smelled and we had a visit from one cockroach in the room. We would not stay here again and cannot recommend it.

Ubud – Private Room / Ground Floor with Private Bathroom (17 EUR / NIGHT)

The house is located within a walking distance to the main street in Ubud – Monkey Forest Road (10 min walk). Its surrounded by a few residential houses and rice fields, so its safe and nice place to live. Within 3-5 min walking distance you will find nice restaurants, good laundry and massage places.

This is a two story house. Your host – Antoine lives on the top floor and sporadically uses kitchen which is located on the ground floor, therefore its correct to say that you have the whole ground floor to yourself (your private room with lovely and large private bathroom, well-equipped kitchen, living room, balcony with large table).

Antoine has a good for Bali internet connection – WiFi with download 1.5 Mbps so this place is perfect for a longer stay for digital nomads and large enough for couples.

Antoine is a really nice guy, very easy-going, accommodating and helpful.

We stayed in Bali for 4 weeks in 8 different places and his house taken under consideration privacy, location, space available and internet access the best suited our needs. We would definitely come back and would consider monthly rental.

GILI ISLANDS, LOMBOK, INDONESIA

Gili Islands – Yoga Garden Rooms Resort (77 EUR / NIGHT)

The hotel benefits from a great, central location on Gili Trawangan island.  Its only 5 min walk from the ferry pier and pretty much right on the beach. However its still quite so you will have a great night of sleep.

The rooms are not very large but cosy, comfortable, nicely styled and very clean. Each bungalow comes with private bathroom with great shower. Also breakfast (we opted for banana pancakes were very good). We would stay again.

SWEDEN

Stockholm – Private Room in Arstavagen (45 EUR / NIGHT)

The apartment is located in a nice residential neighborhood – short walk to the buses (buses: 160 / 164; very frequent) which will bring you within 5 minutes to Gullmarsplan underground station (5 stops from Central Station – where you can find all the buses and trains incl. airport transfers). There are two supermarkets – ICA & Lidl and many restaurants in very close walking distance to the apartment. Taxi from Arlanda Airport cost 675 Swedish Krona.

The apartment is very bright, located on the 4th floor in a building with a lift. Isa’s & Jordi’s place has a well-equipped kitchen, clean nice bathroom with great shower.

They have modern, spacious living room. Your room is a medium size and includes comfortable bed, working desk and chair. Pictures on AirBnb are accurate. There is very good internet connection (20Mbps download) so room is perfect for a longer stay for digital nomads but also good for a few days stay for couples.

Jordi & Isa are very nice and welcoming hosts. They will give you plenty of advises about Stockholm and surroundings. We would definitely stay again.
